The Council is having a membership meeting on Saturday, April 5,th in Burney regarding
the Casino development-limited soveign waiver being introduced for a ballot vote. As the Chairperson I do not feel safe for me or my family to attend this important meeting. Since I receive no Officer pay I volunteer my time at the office and I do this for my people, but How can they call Jamul a helpless man? If he carries a knife, gets drunk that he can not care for himself- and threatens a Tribal representative with a gun-Is he really as helpless as indicated?. NO ONE HIT JAMUL-so when this author states for a fact"what motivates these people to attack a helpless man"-I believe thats what they call karma. The statement "It was sad to just stand there so helpless to ATTEMPT to pull them off him?
Jamul was never hit (although he definately deserved it, in my opinion. Why is this old man threatning a 14 year old kid with a GUN if he is so well respected? We are responsible for our own actions, conduct as individuals
so why did this "concerned Person" stand there? The people I named are well known in our community and they are well known thugs, ride and fight innocent people in packs. One friend of mine actually, had his eye knocked out of its socket and now it bulges out and he has to live with it because "he is no cop caller". Tribal Elder Kathy Martinez was attacked at the last elections and she is recovering from a stroke by these vigilantes, Anna Barnes Elder was pushed & threatened by these same people. My niece was assulted, my nephew was arrested, my daughter was threatened in the past and now they are picking on a child? youin man? Future Tribal leader? What would you do if this happens at each and every Council meeting? I believe these people are bitter, angry and hateful, because we successfully are moving forward as identified in our recent Newsletter. They need to find a life and accept the fact that they were voted out...
When a person of faith claims this is "the truth" who are the "ravenous wolves?? I will end this article because I do have a life and I do have a purpose in this life and it will not be wasted responding to Pit River Truths or is this an attempt at Pit River Truths II? Please note, Lillian Lego assulted me and Jamul Wright threatened my 14 year old grandson. That is the truth. Shonda, who I thought was a friend, choose her path and friends. Jamul threatened to get a gun and shoot my family....Please pray for me and my family. Thank you, P.S. pray for my car also? Jessica

I am responding to the March 27, 2008 no repley article. At least I can repley to this website... I am Jessica E. Jim, Tribal Chair and a mother, grandmother and Elder In Training. The article does not mention that Lillian Lego, Sharon Elmore, Leta Nalton, Shonda Annis, Gwen Wolfin, Pat Wilson, Jeannie Annis and the "well respected" Elder "Jamul Wright" willfully & intentionally came to the Casino meeting to disrupt the meeting, armed with a camera, so I consider that premedated from my point of view. My daughter Shally and grandson (14) years old was a an scheduled appointment when this erupted. My brother Andy was present as the others mentioned because it was a Casino meeting and he wanted to know what was happened.(just like the other people.) AND DID NOTHING other then tell me to go back inside the meeting after I walked outside to smoke a cigerette during a "GRIEVANCE" hearing that involved this family being present.Leta was recording the Casino GM and Casino Accountant while Lillian"Elder" was calling him a liar, a white man who was firing tribal members etc, etc, After the GM & Accountant took off their badeges and said enough is enough-the Council said to turn off the camera. This continued for another 20 minutes. Finally, Council went into executive session and "they" went outside & gathered around the picnic table (where my car was parked) remember-my windshield was busted with a brick (UNsolved)the last time. David Hawkins, my brother and I was laughing & talking when I started to walk back into the meeting when my friend, Shonda Annis called out something to me and I turned and asked WHAT? the next thing I know "Honored Elder Jamul" started calling me a f---ing black bitch. Jamul is vey knowledable with our culture, however, this day he was his normal self, vulgar, drunk and cussing. My brother was pulling me into the meeting, and I know it took every bit of his strength to not react to jamul. Andy left and did the right thing. I told Jamul to shut up, and apparently one of the Health staff told my daughter and grandson that her "mother was being attacked" so they left their appointment to help me. Jamul was still cussing me out and my 14 yr, old grandson stepped infront of me and told Jamul "don't talk to my grandma like that-Jamul told my grandson "Shut up or I will go get my gun and shoot you all"??? I stepped in front of my grandson and told Jamul to leave him alone-he is a kid.Is not that an threat assult on a minor? on my family? I was pulled back towards the back door and when I turned around, Jamul was on the left of me, Lillian & Leta was in the middle and Shonda was on the right of me??? Lillian grabbed my arm and I turned her arm so she could NOT HIT ME. Isn't this assult? The cops took statements from the people & told me to go inside, I did. I had to go to the cop station to file my complaint, after the meeting was over, and I showed them the brusies on my arm. Now why is this acceptable? why?

It was sad to see James surrounded by Jessica and her daughter with her grandson standing in the middle hitting him.
Hello,

I should have said this long ago, but today is as good a time as any.

The Pit River Tribal Council, old and new, does not have the right to tell our Hammawi Band who our council member will be. My mother, Marina Martinez, is the duly elected tribal council member representing the Hammawi Band. No one has the right to deny our Band our representation. It was illegal for the old council to have any action against her. They have no right to do the things they did to her. Its not constitutional, its not legal, its not ethical or moral. Its not Indian. But then again, no one would mistake our council as being indian or native.

If the Pit River Tribe, Tribal Council, and membership, do not want our Hammawi Band at the table, then tell us to leave. Let us leave! If you dont want our progressiveness or our ideas, tell us to go. We will go.

Tribal Council, please pass a motion, a resolution to allow our band to leave, since you dont want our representatives to properly represent the Hammawi people.

You are violating my civil rights by denying me and my people our representation.

Let us go so that we can forge our own destiny and show you how things really should be done. And please do not be jealous when we succeed.

Let us go. We have our ancestral homeland, which belongs to us, not any other Pit River bands. Its our home, and the home where our people have always lived and where we will go and be with them when our time comes.

Let us have our Likely Rancheria, which is ours, and not the Pit River Tribes. The land was purchased for the Rancheria by the BIA from a Hammawi man, for Hammawi people, no others. Our people are buried there. We dont need the Pit River Tribe to have its gruby hands all over our land and our ancestors.

I can see a time in my life time, that we Hammawi will be our own tribe, recognized by everyone. We will be successful, have our language back, our culture, our heritage. My Hammawi ancestors will be smiling down upon us and we can go to them when our time comes, proud of ourselves once again.

Hello,

Band sovereignty needs to be protected at all costs. I just viewed an enrollment ordinance that was reportedly passed by the tribal council this past year. In the document, the word band does not appear once. Not once. If this document is the real deal, and I suspect that it is, then it has come to pass, that this Pit River Tribe, no longer recognizes bands. Our band powers still exist according to our constitution, but our bands are not part of the enrollment process according to our new enrollment ordinance.

I guess everyone who is enrolled from now on, are Pit Rivers, rather than band members first. I think this is the beginning of the end for our tribe.

I will keep on saying this till I cant speak no more. Our bands came before the Pit River Tribe, and will exist long after the Pit River Tribe is no more. The Pit River Tribe, Tribal Council, Enrollment Committee, even the Pit River Tribal Membership do not have the right to dictate to bands who their members will or will not be. That is our right, our sovereignty as a band.

Our bands never signed treaties, we were never pushed into submission, therefore, we never gave up our inherent sovereignty as bands. This inherent sovereignty was gathered together incorrectly to create the Pit River Tribe way back when.

If you read the ICC claims case, it mentions in various places that the bands, and not the tribe, has claim to the lands, our own territory, our own culture, and history.

It saddens me that our bands will no longer be a part of the enrollment process. It is time for our bands to create our own constitutions and governing documents. Nothing in the Pit River Constitution says that we can not do so. We need to exert our sovereignty and take back our future.

Our bands, including my Hammawi Band, need to leave this Pit River Tribe as soon as we can. I no longer have faith in our tribal leadership to lead us into the future. I will be heavily encouraging my band members to petition the tribe to withdraw from the politics of the tribe.

I will never forget the kindness you showed me when I attempted to appeal the disenrollment action. You gave me a challenged status in the Tribe where before I had nothing but disenrolled of membership. The Wintu people and the Yana people are a great and well known people whose traditional tribal land directly bordered those of the Pitt River nation. These people were eventually betrayed by the "European Invasion" in the end even though their ancestors did all they could to preserve the memory of their people. Thank you for your work in protecting the sacred places and the people of all the nations. Where once their was animosity between some peoples perhaps there now is unification to protect what was, what is, and what will be.

Good Morning Link,

I read your article regarding the ongoing issue with unrecognized and/or disenrolled Natives. California Tribes are very difficult to understand at times, especially when it involves Casinos vs enrollment. I, as a registered Democrat voter requested to atten that meeting and I informed the Government that it was not a "Shadley" issue-and that it impacted the Un-recognized Tribes that are seeking federal recognition, but, I was not selected to attend. It is difficult to know that Indians are the only minority that have to PROVE who they are to the United States Government.I strongly support the tribal membership and their integrity to maintain its "sovereignity", but, we do not share the same definition with the Governing body. We do have new members on the Tribal Council, yet, it is now in a "transition" period. We held our elections in August and again in September, however, the Hammawi band & Atwamsani band remains unseated. I remain the Tribal Chairwoman, and look forward to work with the new government, however, I remain with no powers (Other than chair the meeting) authority or responsibility. They denied my honorium & travel compensation this week(as an Officer) so my faith & loyalty to Council must
remain questionable.I hope you and yours continue the fight and I as a Tribal leader stand committed to see the "big picture" on the National level, while at home, I continue to remain loyal to the membership and speak & act in their behalf to the best of my ability. Please send a prayer out to the family of "Ann Rodriquez," (Ajumawi band)and wonderful elder, who recently passed.

Respectfully,
Jessica E. Jim

Chimeesumwi

Greetings to all Pit River. This is Jessica E. Jim, Chair of the Nation. I forgot (in my response to crazee arrow) to mention that I know how he feels regarding family disenrollment when you are Pitt River. My sisters were the first tribal members who were "disenrolled from the Pit River Tribe" due to the same persons who claim or believe they personally have to know you to be considered a Pit River member. The Tribe has determined that these issues regarding enrollment are a priority, however, the intererpation of our Constitution has been re-reviewed by those in power and that is our problem. When the Constition Committee was elected and placed into power to draft this Constitution we had (2) other entities (Legitimate Tribe & Pit River Home & Agricultural Association) known as Erin Forrest who objected very aggressively and vocal because they did not want the Rancherias and the Xl Reservation under the jurisdiction of the Pit River Tribal Council. Based upon the amendments to the Enrollment Ordinances, the Ordinances you may have, and the one on the website, is not the final amended Enrollment Ordinances recently amended. Please contact the Tribal office and request CURRENT ORDINANCES so you will have more information for your continued struggle.
